How to quit vaping: 7 practical steps

No magic trick: a plan for the moments that make you reach for the vape.

Step 1

Clear the house

Get rid of every vape, pod, liquid and charger: home, car, bag, jacket pockets. If it is not there, you cannot grab it.

Step 2

Spot your triggers

Each time you want to vape, note what triggered it: stress, boredom, after eating, friends vaping. You are collecting data, not judging yourself.

Step 3

Ride the wave

A craving rises, peaks and fades, usually within a few minutes. Breathe slowly through it (in 4 seconds, hold 4, out 4, hold 4). You do not have to act on it.

Step 4

Replace the hand-to-mouth habit

Keep sugar-free gum, mints, a toothpick, a straw or a water bottle on you, and use it every time you reach for a vape that is not there.

Step 5

Tell one person

Text one friend that you quit. Being accountable to someone helps at the hard moments.

Step 6

Make an if-then plan

Pick your top trigger and write one line: "If [trigger], then I will [action]." Example: "If I finish lunch, then I walk for 5 minutes."

Step 7

Plan for a slip

One puff is not a reason to give up. If it happens, notice what triggered it and restart right away.

Questions

How long do vape cravings last?

A single craving usually rises, peaks and fades within a few minutes. Riding it out with slow breathing or a short walk is a common strategy.

What if I slip?

One slip does not undo your progress. Note the trigger, then restart. Many people need more than one attempt to quit for good.

Do I need nicotine replacement?

If nicotine withdrawal feels hard, nicotine replacement (patch, gum, lozenge) can help: ask a pharmacist or doctor. In the US, 1-800-QUIT-NOW connects you to a free quitline.
